The Widnes Wild women’s team had a frustrating weekend on the road in the Women’s Premier League, losing 6-1 away to Bracknell Firebees on Saturday and 5-1 away to Swindon Topcats on Sunday.
The Wild women were up against it from the start in Bracknell and were heavily out-shot throughout the match. The first goal came for the Firebees in the 6th minute and was followed by a second some 5 minutes later.
Bracknell scored once more in the second period and added three more goals in the third before the Wild women finally found the back of the net themselves with a goal by team captain Charlene Chapman.
In the game at Swindon on Sunday, the Wild women performed arguably better against a Topcats team who had been unbeaten in the league all season and are one of the favourites for the league title.
Despite being heavily out-shot once again, they actually matched the high flyers for the second two periods, notching up 1-1 and 0-0 period scores, and it was only due to a bad start in the first period that they found themselves 4-0 down after 20 minutes with too much ground to make up.
The Wild women’s goal was scored by Sav Sumner at 32.54 – her second goal of the season.
The Widnes Wild women’s team are away again this Sunday 18th February when they travel to Hull to face the Kingston Diamonds in a 12.30 face-off game. They are then at home to Kingston the following Sunday, 25th February, at Silver Blades Widnes – 5.30pm face off.
