Alex Foster Joins The Giants For 2016/17 Season

The Stena Line Belfast Giants are pleased to announce that Alex Foster has joined the organisation for the 2016/17 Elite League season. Foster will link up with former teammate Steve Saviano in Northern Ireland, with both icing for HC Bolzano of the Austrian Hockey League during the 2015/16 season.

Foster, a 31 year old forward, will add speed and energy to the Giants lineup and will become the 170th player to pull on our Teal jersey when the new season begins.

The American, whose signing was made possible by our partnership with the Ulster University Business School, played Division One NCAA hockey for Bowling Green State University, where he was named in the Second All-Star team following 82 points scored in 72 games played.

Following University, Foster spent six seasons in Toronto and posted 163 points in 337 games played for the Marlies where he wore both an ‘A’ and a ‘C’ for the AHL organisation and also earned himself a call-up to the NHL’s Maple Leafs in 2007/08 season.

The 2016/17 season will be Alex Foster’s sixth in-a-row in Europe following spells with Sparta Prague of the Czech Republic’s Extraliga and three seasons in the DEL split between Adler Mannheim and Iserhohn Roosters.

Alex Foster spoke to Davy McGimpsey from A View From The Bridge on signing in Belfast:

“I have heard nothing but great things about the fans, the hockey and the city from former teammates of mine including Derrick Walser and Mitch Ganzak. After talking with Steve Thornton, this was an offer I just could not turn away, especially with the offer of studying at University.”

“Whatever needs to be done – I am willing to step up and do that. I fully plan to be looked on to win games, be on the powerplay as well as involved in any last minute situations.”

Steve Thornton, Giants Head of Hockey Operations, on the signing of Steve Saviano:

“We wanted to be more fierce in terms of competitiveness & add speed and I think he does both of those for us. Not too long ago Alex was Captain of the Toronto Marlies and put up 30/40 points in the DEL. He is an incredible character, is still in his prime and can play multi positions.”
