A GIANT Message From The Honorary President – Jim Gillespie
The Stena Line Belfast Giants were delighted to receive the message below from Jim Gillespie, Honorary Life President and former owner of the organisation.
Jim originally became involved with the Giants in 2003 and from there took over the ownership commitment for the next 10 years. Gillespie saved the Giants from collapse at the end of the Superleague era in 2003 and steered the Giants throughout the first decade in the Elite League instilling an ethos of community involvement and support as the keys to long term survival of the franchise. Deservedly, Jim was inducted into the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013 for his service to the sport of ice hockey in Northern Ireland.
A Message From The President
“I was delighted to receive from the Odyssey Trust an invitation both to attend November’s Belfast Festival of Hockey tournament, and to drop the puck at the first match. I am even more pleased that my heath has improved to the extent that I fully expect to be able to take up that invitation!
Mitzi and I have missed sitting in our very special seats at the games, and enjoying the thrills and spills of facing old and new opponents, along with the joy of pinching a win in a tight game.
While last year was something of a disappointment when set against recent years, I know that the Giants.org has been working hard to improve things both structurally and on the ice, and we are looking forward with fresh excitement to the new season. We are delighted to see that some of our stalwart players remain, and are keen to renew friendships with them, as well as meeting the new players and seeing them in action.
We look forward also to the refurbished SSE Arena, again underlining the Odyssey Trust’s commitment to ice hockey in NI. It is deeply reassuring to Mitzi and myself that the organisation is in the excellent hands of folk who continue to carry forward the unique characteristics and traditions of the Giant’s ethos.
Last but far from least, there will be chances to meet again some of the diehard supporters/fans/addicts who “bleed tealâ€, as was shown by their charity response during the year. When things were not going so well for me, health-wise, I was touched by the number of good wishes I received, directly and indirectly, from Giants folk.
Only one thing left to say….or more probably shout ….â€C’mon the Giants†for 2015/16!!”
