“A Disappointing Weekend” Leaves Giants Needing To Regain Form

Sunday saw the end of a disappointing weekend for the Stena Line Belfast Giants as they lost out to the Milton Keynes Lightning, 5-4, following on from Saturday’s home defeat to the Edinburgh Capitals.

Adam Keefe labelled the weekend, “a disappointing weekend, for the players, for me, for the fans and for the City of Belfast.”

Following the weekends play, the Giants lie in third place in the Elite League standings with the Manchester Storm having leapfrogged the Belfast side into second place.

Sunday’s loss to Milton Keynes saw the Giants make improvements from Saturday’s disappointing showing, however the late winning goal with 38 seconds remaining was a killer blow. Coach Keefe spoke of his frustration following a better performance on Sunday.

“I thought we started the game better. Our energy level and compete level was there,” said Adam Keefe, talking to A View From The Bridge. “We made some stupid decisions and to a man we are not good enough right now. We gave ourselves a chance to win tonight however we failed to kill penalties. We need our character guys to step up in a big way right now.”

The back-to-back home defeats mean the Giants have now lost three from their last four games and leaves the Cardiff Devils in prime position to clinch a second title in-a-row. With Sheffield at home on Saturday and a trip to Cardiff on Sunday, Adam Keefe and his team need to get back to work in practice this week and find their form.

“Obviously we are struggling and we are going to work our way out of this. If we do not, we are going to get embarrassed by Sheffield. Our team have a tough week of work ahead of them, as do I.”

“The only way we can get out of this is hard work. I was certainly happier with our work ethic tonight however everyone is making mistakes right now. Clearly we have handed the league title to Cardiff, it is only a matter of time before they win it.”

With the Giants still only mathematically in the league title race – the Challenge Cup and Playoffs present other opportunities for the team to compete for trophies this season and Keefe wants his team to reagin the form that saw Belfast pick up impressive road wins already this season,

“However it is still all to play for – starting with the Challenge Cup Final against a team that we know we can beat (Cardiff). Though I do not recognise the team that is on the ice right now and we need to find the team that gutted out wins in Cardiff and Sheffield, full of passion and full of compete level.”

Tickets for the next Giants home game, this Saturday against the Sheffield Steelers, are now on sale. Tickets are available online from Ticketmaster, in person at all Ticketmaster Outlets as well as the Arena Box Office in person and by calling (028) 9073 9074.
