Here are 7 reasons why you should make it to the Giants vs Edinburgh game part of your plans this Saturday:
1. Milestone Weekend
Saturday’s home game vs Edinburgh and Sunday’s road game in Dundee are numbers #999 and #1,000 for the Giants – a historic moment for the organisation!
The very first Giants competitive game was in Nottingham on Saturday 16th September 2000 against the Panthers with the first ever win coming in game #2 with a 6-5 shootout win away vs Bracknell Bees. Since then the Giants have won 613 times overall with 335 losses and 50 draws.
Do you remember the last time these two sides met in the Challenge Cup in Belfast? No? You should.
Friday 18th September 2015 saw the Giants & Capitals play out a 3-3 draw in Belfast. Nothing unusual about that? Wrong!
With the scores tied, the game should have gone into overtime, however the match officials incorrectly called the game as ‘Final’ which led to a lot of confusion on and off the ice on the night. As fate would have it, both sides were scheduled to meet in Belfast the following night in an Elite League game and so, the Elite League announced overtime period and penalty shots if required – would be played before the start of the league game.
24 hours later and Kris Beech scored the winner in overtime with just 10.7 seconds remaining with a shootout looming before the Giants went on to win 5-2 in the Elite League game – two wins in one night!
3. Jared Staal
The hugely talented and well-known Jared Stall, 25 years old, joined the Edinburgh Capitals this past Summer. The 6ft 3” and 210lb forward brings with him experience playing at the highest level of hockey, spending the 2012/13 season with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes.
Recognise the name? That’s likely because Jared Staal is part of one of the most talented hockey playing families in the world! He is one of four brothers, the others being Eric, Jordan and Marc.
4. Win Win Win!
You could be leaving Saturday’s home game vs Edinburgh with a GIANT prize! The Giants 50/50 Draw gives you the chance to leave the game with a GIANT cash prize and remember, the more you buy – the more GIANT the prize! Last week’s prize was £1,152!
