7 Reasons To Get To This Saturday’s Game vs Braehead Clan

This Saturday, face-off 7pm, the Stena Line Belfast Giants return to home ice for their final home exhibition game against Elite League rivals, the Braehead Clan. Saturday’s clash is the first of back-to-back games this weekend with both sides travelling to Glasgow on Sunday, face-off 6pm.

Here are 7 reasons why you should make it to the Giants this Saturday:

1. Fail To Prepare, Prepare To Fail

This weekend sees the final preparations for the 2016/17 Elite League season, which begins for the Giants on Saturday 3rd September with a Challenge Cup clash away against the Fife Flyers. Final preparations means that the Giants will be taking things up a level thanks to an extra week’s worth of practices in Belfast allowing Coach Walser and his team to get to work on, amongst other items, special teams.

Both sets of players will also be out to impress, knowing that a good showing in these exhibition games this weekend could lead to a more favoured role in the team or increased ice time this season.

2. The Life Of Riley

Saturday night at The SSE Arena will give Giants fans the first opportunity to check out new signing Blair Riley as he makes his debut for the organisation. Riley, a 6’0″ Power Forward, signed this past off-season and will add size & firepower to the Giants offensive line up. The 30 year old has spent time in the AHL in each of the past seven seasons, playing over 330 games and was an Assistant Captain with Stockton, St.John’s as well as Bridgeport.

When Blair signed, he said this in his interview with AVFTB:

“I am a bigger, physical forward and I like to play a well rounded game. I was more of a scorer when I played NCAA and when I transitioned to the pro game, I was more of a ‘bottom 6’ forward and was expected to play more of a physical brand of hockey, which is something that I will never shy away from. I am looking forward to playing in front of the Belfast fans and I know we are looking forward to putting a good product on the ice for them.”

Roll on Saturday for Blair’s debut!

3. It’s Holiday Weekend!

That’s right, from the moment you finish work on Friday 26th August there are two main things to get excited about – your extra day off on Monday 29th August and Hockey Night in Belfast on Saturday! The August Summer Bank Holiday that falls on the last Monday of August is almost here, right before Summer holidays end and students return to their school for the new term.

When you come to the game, you could be leaving with a GIANT prize to put the icing on your Bank Holiday cake. The Giants 50/50 Draw returns, giving you the chance to leave the game with a cash prize, remember, the more you buy – the more GIANT the prize! Also running on Saturday night are The Shirt off the Back draw, where you can win a Game Worn jersey for £1, and Chuck-A-Puck, with a prize of a trip for two to Scotland thanks to Stena Line.

4. Familiar Faces

Saturday’s clash in Belfast will see, arguably, the Elite League’s two toughest teams meet and the Giants/Clan rivalry will no doubt he as hotly contested as ever this season. Adding to the rivalry are familiar faces with Craig Peacock, who moved to Braehead this past off-season following seven seasons spent in Belfast and Bari McKenzie who played for the Giants in the 2007/08 season.
