Panthers steal win with late goal
A late Nottingham Panthers goal by Christophe Boivin, his 2nd of the contest, broke up a 1-1 tie and then they added an empty netter seconds from time to deliver a heart-breaking 3-1 defeat of the Flames on Spectrum ice.
Alex Yuill had the only goal of the opening period when he was on target less than 2 minutes into the contest. The home team carried on to a 17-shot period, but the single goal stood as the only one through 20 minutes.
It took until a couple of minutes after midway for Panthers to tie it thanks to Boivin and the clubs went to the 3rd even at a goal each.
Less than 4 minutes from time, Boivin had the winner, and a Flames powerplay and extra skater with their net empty was not enough to level ahead of Brady Norrish’s empty netter 17 seconds from close.
“That one is a gut-wrenching loss because we deserved better,” said Paul Dixon.
“That first period we missed some really high quality chances and we should have been in a position to have a better than 1 goal lead at the start of the 2nd. We had 39 shots, but just one goal after a few games here where we had found a bit more luck around the net.”
“We had won 3 of our last 4 so it would have been nice to have been able to get that late break and take this one too, but it was not to be and now back to training and look ahead to what we can do next weekend to move back into the win column.”
