2016-17 ROSTER: Cownie’s Coming Back

At last Friday’s MK Lightning End of Season Awards, the party atmosphere got underway with the news that Jordan Cownie will return to the club next season.
Jordan, 20, joined the Lightning in 2013 after impressing in his EPL debut season with local rivals Peterborough COWNIE v Flames 20151107Phantoms.  Two more impressive seasons, in MKL colours – coupled with success at international level – brought him to the attention of the Elite League’s Braehead Clan last summer.  However he played just five games in Clan colours before returning to Milton Keynes on loan.  And the season just ended was Jordan’s best yet, with 62 points from 51 games.
Now, as the Smith Recycling-sponsored Lightning prepare for their final season in the English Premier League, Cownie becomes the latest signing – on a two year contract which should see him in MKL colours as they enter the Elite League in 2017.
Lightning Head Coach and Director of Hockey, Pete Russell – who has coached Jordan extensively both at MKL and with the Great Britain U20’s, commented: “I’m absolutely delighted to have secured Jordan Cownie’s services for the next two seasons.  He’s a great kid who I’ve known for a long time. Jordan is a a very skilled forward with explosive speed who can really change a game. He has good vision and can open the ice up.
COWNIE v Swindon 20160213 2 TONY“Last season we worked on his whole game – he made great strides and is becoming a more complete player, but I never want to take away his offensive creativity. He’s a player that gets people off their seats! Every club needs players like that if they can get them.
“Jordan is a big part of our team and one of the most talented young players in the country. I know the fans will be delighted and will be able to enjoy him for another few years at least.”
Speaking about his return to Milton Keynes, Jordan said, “When I found out the club was heading up to the next level it was a no brainer for me to come back and play for a coach I can trust – and for an organisation that means so much to a lot of special people!
“I hope our supporters enjoy the summer and I can’t wait to get back and start getting ready for another season with MKL.”
